Unique high-speed internet coming to rural areas of Foothills County

Mage Networks announced it is bringing high-speed internet access to some rural areas of Foothills County, including Priddis, Millarville, Kew and out towards Bragg Creek.

Mage Networks CEO Sayed-Amr El-Hamamsy said this new section of coverage will provide first-time internet access to many homes in the area.

“There’s very little service in these areas, some of them do not have (internet) access at all,” said El-Hamamsy.

“We are upgrading the whole area to have access to high-speed internet service,” he added.

Based in Calgary, Mage Networks serves primarily rural areas in Alberta and Ontario.

Its high-speed internet is a bit different than other providers. Using technology it pioneered, Mage Networks offers an internet service that is better adapted for rural areas.

The technology combines traditional fibre optic and wireless networks together. The hybrid network infrastructure is designed for better rural access and uses a combination of satellite, fibre optic and wireless transfer.

“By combining our unique technology with the fibre in a very carefully designed way, we provide the best of both worlds,” said El-Hamamsy.

“(We provide) an inexpensive network that still manages to provide very high-speed access to all the customers in the area,” he added.

The technology is unique to Mage Networks and allows it to offer internet speeds of 100 megabits per second to rural customers at a cheaper price and minimal installation compared to traditional satellite and wired network options.

The company typically uses existing power poles or fence posts to mount its hardware, which is usually less invasive and more environmentally sound.
