Long Plain First Nation and Mage Networks Form Joint Venture to Deliver High-Speed Internet Access

Long Plain First Nation, Manitoba—March 3, 2021.   The Long Plain First Nation and Mage Networks today announced the beginning of construction of a data pipeline project that will connect over 400 members of the Long Plain First Nation to high-speed internet.

Access to high-speed internet long ago moved from being a nice-to-have to being an essential tool for business, communities, governments and educators.  “This past year has shown all Canadians just how important it is to be able to connect to the internet—for shopping, for school, for banking and a host of other issues,” said Long Plain Chief Dennis Meeches.  “This is a fact of life that many indigenous communities across Canada, including Long Plain First Nation have had to deal with because our communities had never been connected to the web.”

Calgary’s Mage Networks entered into a joint venture with the Long Plain First Nation through its Arrowhead Development Corporation in 2020 in order to plan and develop a data pipeline network on Nation’s territory at Long Plain Reserve No. 6 that will see over 400 residents gain access to internet access with upload and download speeds of at least 100 mbps.

“Mage Networks is very excited to be able to partner with the Long Plain First Nation to be able to develop and deploy this critical technology infrastructure for the members of Nation” said Dr. Sisso El-Hamamsy, President and CEO of Mage Networks.  “Our MagiNet™ technology is perfectly suited to a project like this one at Long Plain First Nation, it provides for a data pipeline that can provide access to each residence on the Nation without the need for and cost associated with fibre installation to each building.”

The network will use data pipelines in a series of short hops, where the locations are strategically selected to distribute the data from central locations. Those data pipelines which are designed specifically for each network and can include fibre and wireless components, carry multiple signals in multiple directions, intelligently choosing whichever routes will avoid obstacles and interference with other data pipelines. The data automatically zips on and off wired and wireless connections to maximize efficiency.

Final network planning is almost complete and construction and installation of the network is expected to begin this month with residents being able to access high-speed internet within the next several weeks.

What is New Bandwidth Injection™? (NBI™)

Mage Networks - Private Networks

New Bandwidth Injection™ is a feature of MagiNetthat is designed to mitigate strain on the network. NBI™ works by allowing additional bandwidth to be injected into the network, removing bottlenecks and increasing the overall capacity. The advanced routing and simplicity of our proprietary firmware, MagiLink™, facilitates this through adding more Data Pipelines in the area, and upgrading the equipment in the Data Pipelines. Resulting in exceptionally high bandwidth, over long distances and large areas.

Data Pipelines in the MagiNet™ network system have recently been upgraded to a capacity of 1 Gbps by using 802.11ad standard-based equipment operating at 60 GHz. Multiple pipelines can be deployed so that data capacity can be scaled without limits. Our test results have shown no degradation for a minimum of 20 kms, granting us an almost unlimited range. This performance illustrates the way MagiNet™ incorporates emerging technologies to continue improving its performance and capabilities.

What does this mean in simple terms? MagiNet™ can connect any home or business in a target area, guaranteeing you get the data you need, whenever you need it.

November Network Update – Alberta

Network Update - Alberta

Over the last few months, our team has been busy with network deployments in Alberta, Saskatchewan, as well as supporting our partners in the United States. We couldn’t have come this far without the support and patience of our customers, the community, as well as local government leaders. On behalf of the entire team at Mage, thank you.

The cooler weather is setting in, but we’re not slowing down, so I’d like to take a few minutes to update you on the status of our network projects here in Alberta. Though network construction has taken longer than we expected, we’re tirelessly committed to connecting underserved areas to fast reliable, high-speed Internet.

Our work in the Wintergreen began in the fall and we’ve since completed a verified network design that’ll ensure anyone who’d like to be connected, can be and will experience high quality service. Weather-permitting, we’ll continue to install poles and complete home installations. We’ll also continue work on the Data Pipeline that will connect Wintergreen to the rest of our network in the Hamlet.

As of writing this, our team is in the West Bragg and Leisure Lake area completing the measurements required to produce a complete design for the area. We’ll be following the same plan as in Wintergreen – installing poles and completing home installations.

We’ve planned a fiber build from our Bragg Creek field office to Redwood Meadows. Digging the underground fiber will begin as soon as the permit process is complete. As the fiber build gets underway, we’ll begin deploying Data Pipelines in the area, which means that as soon as the fiber is completed we can turn on service immediately.

Our biggest push this winter will be the Data Pipeline to West Bragg and all areas in between, as well as the Data Pipeline towards the Leisure Lake area. We understand how frustrating it may be not knowing the exact date that our service will be available at your home. However, we’re committed to connecting you to fast, reliable high-speed Internet as quickly as we can.

To stay updated on our progress, keep checking back here on the blog and connect with us via your favourite social media channel.

What are Mage’s minimum bandwidth guarantees?

We understand that fast, reliable, high-speed Internet is critical for work, school and fun. So we don’t cut corners on bandwidth. We’re also the only Internet Service Provider that has implemented minimum bandwidth guarantees, including Guaranteed Minimum Bandwidth™ and Guaranteed Streaming Bandwidth™

What is Guaranteed Streaming Bandwidth™ (GSB™)?

Our MAGE 100 service includes GSB™. This means that in the unlikely event that everyone is online at the same time, the network will have adequate bandwidth available so that our GSB™ customers will always be able to watch an HD Netflix movie AND have a Zoom call at the same time. [Read More About GSB™]

What is Guaranteed Minimum Bandwidth™ (GMB™)?

Our MAGE 50 service includes GMB™. This means that in the unlikely event that everyone is online at the same time, the network will have adequate bandwidth available so that our GMB™ customers will always be able to have a Zoom call.

How does Mage deliver GSB ™ and GMB™?

First, our network is designed so that any single 100 Mbps Data Pipeline will never have more than fourteen (14) GSB customers on it (more for a mix of GSB and GMB customers).

Second, if we must add new customers to a pipeline, we can easily increase the overall capacity of the whole network (or a branch of the network) using our concept of New Bandwidth Injection™ (NBI™) to ensure our minimum bandwidth standards are maintained.

(*Our maximum speed is 100 Mbps Download and 100 Mbps Upload when a network is fully constructed.)

What are the health effects on people as a result of the Electro-Magnetic (EM) waves?

The question of health effects on people as a result of the Electro-Magnetic (EM) waves used in communications systems (such as Wi-Fi, 4G, LTE, and 5G) is an important one. As such, we’ve been asked specifically about the effect of MagiNet™ on one’s health.

Here’s some information to consider:

  1. Some studies have shown that there is a link between high levels of EM exposure and cancer in male rats. The same study shows that for female rats and mice (both female and male) the evidence is unclear. The same study also shows that life expectancy for the male rats exposed is higher than that of the control group.
  2. The study exposed the rats and mice to high levels of radiation for far longer than any human would be exposed to (9 hours per day, at 1 to 4 times the maximum allowed level from cell phones).
  3. Power levels decline rapidly with distance. The most significant impact comes from devices closest to a person. For example, a cell phone is constantly trying to reach the tower to tell it where it is. This transmitted power is much higher than the received power from the tower and is closest to you. The transmitted power varies with the distance between the cell phone and the cell tower. However, even then the power emitted from phones very low compared to sunlight which can put up to 1000 watts (10,000 times more than a cell phone) on your body when you walk outdoors. The power from just the Ultra-Violet (UV) rays from the sun is 30 watt and our bodies have evolved to deal with these kinds of heating effects. The EM waves from communications devices are millions of times lower than naturally occurring ones.
  4. Electromagnetic waves of some high frequencies such as Ultraviolet, X-Rays and Gamma do have serious effects (though moderate amounts of these ultra high frequencies are beneficial: UV helps metabolise Vitamin D for strong bones, X-Rays are used for medical diagnostics all the time and Gamma rays are used in radiation therapy to kill cancer cells.) Even still, Ultraviolet is 100,000 to 10 million times higher frequency than what MagiNet™ uses; X-Rays are 10 Million to 10 Billion times higher and Gamma Rays are even higher.

With MagiNet™ we place the units outside the home, they beam away from the building and we mount them in shields so the leakage into the house is much lower than what is emitted by the devices already in the house. Additionally, the exterior walls or roof decreases the incoming radiation and the use of directional antennas ensures that beams are focused and don’t spread out everywhere.

What is Guaranteed Streaming Bandwidth™ (GSB™)?

When you’re shopping around for internet service, it can be confusing.

We understand.

Typically providers will quote an “up to” speed. “Up to” speeds mean that if no one else is on the network, you should experience speeds at these rates. However – the truth is that many service providers have thousands of subscribers that you share bandwidth with, resulting in a lower speed at your home. (Read the fine print and you’ll notice that “up to” speeds are not guaranteed.)

In rural areas, you may see download speeds of “up to” 25 Mbps and upload speeds of “up to” 5 Mbps. But we’ve heard from people who are seeing actual download speeds drop to as low as 1.2 Mbps! This kind of data rates makes checking Facebook or sending an email painful and streaming services out-of-the-question (services such as Netflix recommend a minimum of 3 Mbps to stream in standard definition.) Add to all this that slow upload speeds affect your ability to participate in virtual meetings or online learning.

This is why Mage is committed to guaranteeing minimum speeds. We understand that certain services such as Netflix and Zoom require minimum bandwidth in order to deliver a great experience (who enjoys buffering and awkward frozen video calls?)

With the MAGE 100 Internet service package, we offer Guaranteed Streaming Bandwidth™ (GSB™)

GSB™ ensures that you can always do a lot more than surf the Internet, check your email or scroll social media. Our GSB™ is a minimum guarantee that means you’ll never have more than a certain number of customers sharing your bandwidth and that your speed will never drop below 7 Mbps.

How can we do this?

Our 100 Mbps Data Pipeline will never have more than fourteen (14) customers on it. Second, if we must add customers to a data pipeline we can increase the overall capacity of the network (or a branch of the network) using our concept of  New Bandwidth Injection™ (NBI™).  Using New Bandwidth Injection™ (NBI™), the network gets upgraded to ensure we meet our guarantees.
