What is New Bandwidth Injection™? (NBI™)

Mage Networks - Private Networks

New Bandwidth Injection™ is a feature of MagiNetthat is designed to mitigate strain on the network. NBI™ works by allowing additional bandwidth to be injected into the network, removing bottlenecks and increasing the overall capacity. The advanced routing and simplicity of our proprietary firmware, MagiLink™, facilitates this through adding more Data Pipelines in the area, and upgrading the equipment in the Data Pipelines. Resulting in exceptionally high bandwidth, over long distances and large areas.

Data Pipelines in the MagiNet™ network system have recently been upgraded to a capacity of 1 Gbps by using 802.11ad standard-based equipment operating at 60 GHz. Multiple pipelines can be deployed so that data capacity can be scaled without limits. Our test results have shown no degradation for a minimum of 20 kms, granting us an almost unlimited range. This performance illustrates the way MagiNet™ incorporates emerging technologies to continue improving its performance and capabilities.

What does this mean in simple terms? MagiNet™ can connect any home or business in a target area, guaranteeing you get the data you need, whenever you need it.

What are Mage’s minimum bandwidth guarantees?

We understand that fast, reliable, high-speed Internet is critical for work, school and fun. So we don’t cut corners on bandwidth. We’re also the only Internet Service Provider that has implemented minimum bandwidth guarantees, including Guaranteed Minimum Bandwidth™ and Guaranteed Streaming Bandwidth™

What is Guaranteed Streaming Bandwidth™ (GSB™)?

Our MAGE 100 service includes GSB™. This means that in the unlikely event that everyone is online at the same time, the network will have adequate bandwidth available so that our GSB™ customers will always be able to watch an HD Netflix movie AND have a Zoom call at the same time. [Read More About GSB™]

What is Guaranteed Minimum Bandwidth™ (GMB™)?

Our MAGE 50 service includes GMB™. This means that in the unlikely event that everyone is online at the same time, the network will have adequate bandwidth available so that our GMB™ customers will always be able to have a Zoom call.

How does Mage deliver GSB ™ and GMB™?

First, our network is designed so that any single 100 Mbps Data Pipeline will never have more than fourteen (14) GSB customers on it (more for a mix of GSB and GMB customers).

Second, if we must add new customers to a pipeline, we can easily increase the overall capacity of the whole network (or a branch of the network) using our concept of New Bandwidth Injection™ (NBI™) to ensure our minimum bandwidth standards are maintained.

(*Our maximum speed is 100 Mbps Download and 100 Mbps Upload when a network is fully constructed.)

What is Guaranteed Streaming Bandwidth™ (GSB™)?

When you’re shopping around for internet service, it can be confusing.

We understand.

Typically providers will quote an “up to” speed. “Up to” speeds mean that if no one else is on the network, you should experience speeds at these rates. However – the truth is that many service providers have thousands of subscribers that you share bandwidth with, resulting in a lower speed at your home. (Read the fine print and you’ll notice that “up to” speeds are not guaranteed.)

In rural areas, you may see download speeds of “up to” 25 Mbps and upload speeds of “up to” 5 Mbps. But we’ve heard from people who are seeing actual download speeds drop to as low as 1.2 Mbps! This kind of data rates makes checking Facebook or sending an email painful and streaming services out-of-the-question (services such as Netflix recommend a minimum of 3 Mbps to stream in standard definition.) Add to all this that slow upload speeds affect your ability to participate in virtual meetings or online learning.

This is why Mage is committed to guaranteeing minimum speeds. We understand that certain services such as Netflix and Zoom require minimum bandwidth in order to deliver a great experience (who enjoys buffering and awkward frozen video calls?)

With the MAGE 100 Internet service package, we offer Guaranteed Streaming Bandwidth™ (GSB™)

GSB™ ensures that you can always do a lot more than surf the Internet, check your email or scroll social media. Our GSB™ is a minimum guarantee that means you’ll never have more than a certain number of customers sharing your bandwidth and that your speed will never drop below 7 Mbps.

How can we do this?

Our 100 Mbps Data Pipeline will never have more than fourteen (14) customers on it. Second, if we must add customers to a data pipeline we can increase the overall capacity of the network (or a branch of the network) using our concept of  New Bandwidth Injection™ (NBI™).  Using New Bandwidth Injection™ (NBI™), the network gets upgraded to ensure we meet our guarantees.

Connecting underserved areas with Internet technology that’s radically different in every way

In many parts of Canada and the United States, people who have no choice but to work-from-home (and school from home) are learning that high-speed Internet is a disparate experience based on the provider and postal code. The same beautiful geography (trees, mountains and valleys) that attracts many people to rural areas, is the reason that Internet connectivity can be poor at best. And now the higher-than-normal Internet traffic we’re currently experiencing has put a spotlight on the vast disparity of Internet service.

The technology designed by Mage Networks – MagiNet™- is radically different from other technology providers. MagiNet™ sees through (or around) even the biggest obstacles, delivering seamless Internet using mesh networks.

Mesh networks have long been regarded as a simple type of network to deploy over difficult terrain. It’s the best solution for these areas because each device can connect to every other device, thereby providing multiple paths for the Internet signal to flow. Traditional tower-based networks have a central tower beaming the signal in straight lines. If the terrain or an object blocks the straight line, there will be a dead spot where the tower cannot “see”. Additionally, as the signal moves further away it loses strength, which decreases the data rate (the connection speed measured in millions of bits per second, Mbps).

However, it’s a well-known fact that mesh networks commonly have a fundamental flaw – the inability to maintain data rate over multiple hops. The Mage team (with hundreds of man-years of research experience) designed MagiNet™ such that they’ve tested it over 20 kms with 14 hops and ZERO data rate loss. This means that obstacles and terrain that previously prevented consistent wireless service are no longer a problem and MagiNet™ delivers High-Speed Broadband more cost-efficiently and quickly than traditional solutions.

Here are a few other ways MagiNet™ is distinguished from traditional technology:

  1. We go low. Where traditional technology must leverage greater heights, our units are installed at heights of 3 – 5 m. This lowers the installation costs, speeds up the installation process, avoids polluting the spectrum over large areas and allows for multiple networks side-by-side.
  2. We reduce power. While traditional technology requires greater use of power our network uses a fraction of the power. The data pipeline relay consumes 5 watts which means the cost of power is low, smaller backup batteries to maintain power during blackouts, smaller, lighter solar panels. This leads to lower/simpler installation even in areas with no available power source.
  3. We go short.Fade margin, a measure of the quality of a connection, is high resulting in more consistent high performance regardless of weather conditions. Having wireless or satellite service drop out during rain, storms or blizzards is a common occurrence in rural areas.
  4. We go narrow. Using narrow beam antennas lowers interference, increases the fade margin, reduces spectral pollution and permits multiple data pipelines in close proximity to each other. Antennas on towers are intended to cover a huge area, therefore making it open to interference and forcing a large separation between towers. It is why many services have to rely on expensive licensed spectrum, while Mage can use unlicensed spectrum.

MagiNet™ uses the most advanced devices on the market, capable of carrying 1 Gbps, of data. In our current Bragg Creek design, we have six (6)  Data Pipelines which means we can pour in 6 Gbps of data into the whole area. To achieve similar numbers you’d either need to invest in fiber (which costs millions of dollars) or invest in approximately 20 towers, which would also cost millions of dollars.

Mage Networks is currently in the process of deploying a network in the Bragg Creek area, which will bring fast, reliable and consistent Internet to homes and businesses.
